Family Art Week 2020

Family Art Week

We have created seven daily art activities that are perfect for children and families to do at home. Since we can’t currently run our family learning sessions at the Cathedral we thought we’d bring the fun to you!  All the resources are free to download and each daily art activity is inspired by the Cathedral, from the stained glass to stone gargoyles!

You can download all seven days of actvities here.

Don't forget to share your artwork with us online using #creativecathedral.

Day One: Design a Crown

Inspired by the coronation at Gloucester Cathedral of boy-king Henry III, design your own regal headgear and consider how you would rule if made a monarch.

Day Two: Doves of Peace

The Dove is a powerful symbol of peace and can be seen all over the Cathedral in carvings and stained glass. Use this activity to make your own pencil puppet dove to fly at home.

Day Three: Nine Men’s Morris

This age-old game can be played anywhere! Cut out your playing board and make some checkers to play this game with others in your household.

Day Four: Make a Doodle Colouring Sheet

Use this guide to create your own flower-inspired doodle colouring sheet and then enjoy colouring it in!

Day Five: Sculpt a Mini Gargoyle or Grotesque

We’ve used our ever popular (and often garish) carved gargoyles and grotesques to inspire this activity. Not only can you make your own ‘salt dough’ - a great clay substitute, you can sculpt your own gruesome grotesque to keep!

Day Six: Amazing Animals

Design templates of your favourite animals, cut out in card and decorate.

Day Seven: Dress Up Fun

We can’t get to the Cathedral’s dressing up selection at the moment so we’ve created this resource to inspire some creative dressing up! Use pictures of figures from the Cathedral’s stained glass to inspire a dress-up outfit. If you don’t fancy dressing up as a Knight, King or an Angel why not look up your own historic picture and re-create the look using household items. If it’s safe to share then add your Dress Up selfie to any of our social media pages using #creativecathedral to add to our gallery of creativity!
