Middle Choir

Middle Choir: Talented Young Singers

The new Cathedral Middle Choir will be formed in September 2019. The new choir will be an intermediate step between the Junior Choir and Youth Choir, with the aim of further developing the musicianship of young people. Young people can join the new Middle Choir from school year 6, with no audition. Members will leave the Middle Choir at the end of school year 9 and be encouraged to progress into the Cathedral Youth Choir (school years 10 to 13).

Rehearsals will be on Saturday morning during term-time, 11.00am - 12.00noon, in the Cathedral Education Centre.

If you are in school years 6-9, or are a parent/guardian who has a son or daughter interested in joining the brand new Cathedral Middle Choir, please email the Music Department Manager, Helen Sims, at helen.sims@gloucestercathedral.org.uk

We really look forward to hearing from you!

Information for Parents/Guardians

Dates and duties

The Cathedral Music Department produces a ‘Dates List’ which is updated and issued at the end of each term, ready for the next term. It will show the commitments of all of the Cathedral Choirs, it is colour coded to ease identification of matters that affect you, information for Middle Choir is coloured  mauve. The first pages show the routine rehearsals and services, the following pages show changes to the normal routine. The Dates List generally covers three terms to give everyone a chance to plan and commit to the longer term events. Commitment is the key to a successful choir and to enjoyment and fulfilment of expectations.

Uniform

The Cathedral Middle Choir will be a ‘robed’ choir; we hope that this will make the members feel an integral part of Cathedral music. Initially activities will be limited to rehearsals but as their confidence and ability grows the choir will be gently immersed into the full range of Music Department activities.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will be held in the Cathedral Education Centre, which has its own toilet facilities, and a rehearsal room. The Education Centre is used every weekday by the Cathedral Education staff who run visits and workshops for Gloucestershire Schools, which means that there will often be material left set up for the Monday morning school group. You are requested to inform your child that any items left out should not be touched or moved, this is a condition set by the Education Centre staff on our use of the building on a Saturday morning. The Education Centre door is never to be left ajar, the area is vulnerable to people just walking in off the street. When you take your son/daughter to rehearsal please do not leave the door open for other parents to enter, not even for two minutes. There is a buzzer system entry and the door can be remotely opened from the inside of the building.

Choir Repertoire

Many of the children will have been in the Cathedral Junior Choir, they will have been taught by the Singing Development Leader, Nia Llewelyn Jones, in basic singing technique through use of secular and sacred songs. The Middle Choir will build on this technique and the repertoire will be a similar mixture of songs, aiming to stretch and broaden each singer. We sincerely hope that everyone will continue to enjoy themselves at both rehearsals and other events.

We look forward to welcoming the members of the Middle Choir for their first rehearsal on Saturday 7 September 2019, in the Cathedral Education Centre. Access to the Education Centre is shown on the attached location document.
