Mental Health Awareness Week 2020

We’re proud to support National Mental Health Awareness Week 18 - 24 May, a UK-wide initiative hosted by the Mental Health Foundation.

Every day we draw on our vision to seek to be ‘in tune with heaven and in touch with daily life’ alongside our roots as a Benedictine Abbey.  The Cathedral values its spiritual inheritance from the Benedictine monks who contemplated the beauty and variety of the world as a way of being present to themselves, to others and to God.

Enabling each other to find those points of stillness, peace and connection remains as important as ever.  During Mental Health Awareness Week we are sharing our ongoing work to help promote how we can all care for our own wellbeing and that of the community around us. 

We will be promoting creative resources, inspired by the Cathedral and its rich heritage, that are accessible to all and sharing links to organisations who work locally and nationally to provide services for people living with mental illness. We hope that getting involved will promote awareness and understanding of mental illness and reduce stigma for all those affected, ensuring we encourage human wellbeing and wholeness.

Resource One: Christian Meditation

Meditation generally can help reduce stress and anxiety.  Christian Meditation puts our relationship with God at the heart of this practice, without compromising on the mental health benefits of greater self-awareness. At a time when our Cathedral is not yet open for public worship many may find meditation a good way to pray and encourage stillness at a stressful time. We have put together this simple resource to guide you through Christian Meditation whenever you need it.

Resource Two: Art Activities 

Art activities offer wide-ranging benefits to support physical and mental wellbeing - from alleviating anxiety and building confidence, to creating a space for shared learning and connection.  We have developed these Art for Wellbeing resources to provide accessible and meaningful creative engagement opportunities for all.
