What is conservation? Stonemason Trainee

Conservation is a necessary process in order to maintain Gloucester Cathedral to the best possible standard in order for all to enjoy. It is important that we are able to conserve and restore the craftsmanship of previous generations, whilst securing the future of this magnificent building.

What does conservation involve?

As a vast building to maintain, there is never a moments rest as something always needs fixing or replacing.

Whilst some stones have lasted 900 years, others may have to be replaced more than once in their lifetime.

All of this work is carried out by our skilled team of stonemasons who work all year round to ensure that the Cathedral is kept in the best possible condition for many more years to come.

How can you help?

With the Cathedral in constant need of essential restoration work and it is important that we secure funding to help us keep the building and its beautiful surroundings in good condition.
