Conductor: Adrian Partington

The Cathedral Choir, together with the Cornetts and Sackbuts, and Baroque Strings of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (Director Jeremy West) will be performing Monteverdi’s famous “Vespers of 1610” in Gloucester Cathedral on 28 November, 2020 at 5.30 p.m.

The collection of motets and concertos entitled the Vespro della Beata Vergine was composed by Monteverdi during his years as Maestro di Cappella at the Gonzaga court in Mantua, possibly to assist him in certain job applications. Accordingly, the collection includes choral, solo and instrumental music in the most advanced styles of the early seventeenth century. The music is by turn thrilling, virtuosic, intimate and atmospheric. There is no other work like it; in terms of impact, it matches the very best that Bach or Handel achieved.

Join us for our Annual Choir Fundraising Concert performed in the beautiful surroundings of Gloucester Cathedral.
