History in the making as Gloucester Cathedral gets set to recruit Girl Choristers as members of the acclaimed Cathedral Choir

Gloucester Cathedral is delighted to announce the establishment of Girl Choristers, who will sing as members of the Cathedral Choir for the first time in history.  Auditions will be held on Saturday 23 April for girls aged 7-12.

The Cathedral is now embarking on a thorough recruitment process, including planned visits to schools, and an exciting ‘Come and Sing Open Day’ at the Cathedral on Saturday 9 April. Girls and boys aged 7-12 are invited to come along and experience the fun of singing in this fantastic building and to get a small taste of what it might be like to be a Cathedral Chorister.

Girl Choristers will be drawn from local schools, much like the Cathedral’s unique Youth Choir.  Adrian Partington, Director of Music at Gloucester Cathedral said “We hope to select choristers from a range of backgrounds, many of whom may not have considered the prospect of singing in a Cathedral Choir before.  Our aim is to ‘discover’ some very talented girls along the way.”

The Girls will begin rehearsing in September and will then sing at Evensong each Monday from October as well as at Christmas and Easter services, playing a full part in the Cathedral’s musical worship.

The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester said “This decision represents an exciting new chapter in the Cathedral’s famous Choral Foundation.  We are thrilled to be offering the many benefits of singing as part of a Cathedral Choir to a wider audience.  This will ensure that young girls and boys will be lifting their voices in song at Gloucester Cathedral for many years to come.”

If you would like more information about the Come and Sing Open Day or details about how to apply for a Girl Chorister audition, please email Nia Llewelyn Jones, Conductor of the Girls of the Cathedral Choir:
