Gloucester Cathedral announces a new Middle Choir

As the current choir year comes to an end, Gloucester Cathedral is delighted to announce the formation of a new Middle Choir from September 2019.

The Cathedral Middle Choir will be an intermediate step between the Junior Choir and Youth Choir aimed at further developing the musicianship of young people from school years 6-9. Members will leave the Middle Choir at the end of school year 9 and be encouraged to progress into the Youth Choir (school years 10 to 13).

Rehearsals will be held on Saturday mornings during term-time at 11.00am until 12noon in the Cathedral Education Centre, and no audition is necessary to join. The Cathedral’s Director of Music, Adrian Partington, will conduct the choir assisted by Jonathan Hope, Assistant Director of Music and Mary Pan, Organ Scholar.

This is an exciting opportunity for young people to come and sing both sacred and secular music in the spectacular surroundings of Gloucester Cathedral, and to be part of a friendly and fun-loving group of young people.

If you are in school years 6-9, or you are a parent/guardian who has a son or daughter who may be interested in joining the new Cathedral Middle Choir, please email the Music Department Manager, Helen Sims, at Following a very busy year the music department are now on their well-deserved summer break, therefore they will reply to your emails/enquiries in September.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Gloucester Cathedral prepares to make history with its first ever female Organ Scholar

Gloucester Cathedral is delighted to announce the arrival of a new music team member in September 2019.  Mary Pan comes to Gloucester from Chicago and will make history as the Cathedral’s first ever female organ scholar.

Mary was organ scholar in the busy music department of Saint James Cathedral (Episcopal) for the last two years. While there, she enjoyed accompanying the highly regarded cathedral choir, which sings under the direction of Stephen Buzard. Mary is a graduate of Yale School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music. Prior to Chicago, she served as organist and organ scholar at a number of churches in Connecticut and New York, including the historic Grace Church in New York City.

Mary will succeed Christopher Too, who will join King’s College, Cambridge later this year to continue his studies following a hugely successful year as organ scholar at Gloucester Cathedral.
