Auditions for Boy and Girl Choristers to be held at Gloucester Cathedral this month

Wednesday 26 February (girls) and Friday 28 February (boys)

Singing auditions for aspiring choristers are set to take place at Gloucester Cathedral later this month. If you know a girl or boy that loves to sing, now is the time to get in touch.

Girl Chorister voice trials are set for Wednesday 26 February 2020 with Boys Chorister trials on Friday 28 February 2020. Children in school years 3 to 5 five are welcome to apply.

Successful applicants will receive a world-class musical education and will have the opportunity to sing alongside professionals in the magnificent Cathedral.  As well as regular weekly services during term-time, the choirs sing at high-profile events throughout the Christian year, including Christmas and Easter.  Other performance opportunities include singing in the diocese, making recordings and broadcasts, as well as touring abroad.  Previous successful trips have included Canada, USA, South Africa and Sweden.

For hundreds of years boy choristers have been educated exclusively at King’s, with each boy receiving a choral scholarship towards their school fees. Girl Choristers were established in 2016, and from 2021, will be offered a choral scholarship by the School and the Cathedral. Additional bursary support may also be available.

From 2021, Chorister duties will be shared equally between boys and girls, ensuring both play a full role in the musical life of the Cathedral. This development is a significant step in the Cathedral’s rich choral history and will ensure equal opportunity for both girls and boys. Gloucester Cathedral Choir is rightly regarded as one of the best in the country and these new arrangements will strengthen and enhance its reputation.

To register for a voice trial, or for further information, please contact the Admissions Office at The King’s School, on 01452 337377 or e mail registrar@thekingsschool.co.uk

The King’s School, Gloucester is one of the county’s leading independent day schools, which offers academic excellence, outstanding pastoral care and a programme to nurture individual strengths.  Successful applicants will receive a Scholarship and a reduction in school fees. Cathedral Junior Choir, Middle Choir and Youth Choir
As well as an established Boy and Girl Chorister programme, there are also junior, middle and youth choirs that welcome young singers.

Gloucester Cathedral Junior Choir was formed in 2011 with the aim of giving girls and boys in school years 2 to 5 the opportunity to be part of the musical worship of the Cathedral. The choir is a lively group of singers which learns an exciting range of music. They perform once a month within the Sunday Eucharist, at termly concerts and at major events throughout the Church year.  There is no formal audition process, and we are keen to welcome new members.

Gloucester Cathedral Middle Choir is an intermediate step between the Junior Choir and Youth Choir aimed at further developing the musicianship of young people from school years 6-9. Members will leave the Middle Choir at the end of school year 9 and be encouraged to progress into the Youth Choir (school years 10 to 13).

Gloucester Cathedral Youth Choir was founded in 1999 and is made up of talented young singers in school years 10 to 13 from schools and colleges all around Gloucestershire.  Made up of both boys and girls, it meets twice a week during school term to rehearse after school on a Monday and Thursday, and sings Evensong every Thursday.  Membership is by audition.
