Fixed Term, 4 years: £16,708 per annum for Level 2 Qualified candidates, rising to £18,942 on completion of Level 3 in 2022



Gloucester Cathedral is delighted to support the Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship in developing stonemasons to care for our national heritage.  We have secured funding to support two suitably qualified and motivated Apprentices looking to develop their skills and career whilst working for Gloucester Cathedral’s Stonemason Team.

Gloucester Cathedral is looking for 2 passionate and committed individuals who are seeking to complete their apprenticeship in the field of Heritage Masonry and Conservation as members of our outstanding Stonemason Team. The minimum entry level will be NVQ2 Stonemasonry or an equivalent Level 2 Diploma.

Level 3 candidates will undertake a 2-year structured traineeship at Foundation degree level in the Gloucester Cathedral Workshop.

Level 2 candidates will similarly start in Gloucester Cathedral Workshop and complete their Level 3 qualification before starting the Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship’s (CWF) Foundation degree.

The training will include:

  • Completion of the CWF Foundation degree with the University of Gloucestershire
  • Assisting in carrying out both general maintenance and specific project work on the Cathedral’s masonry
  • Using a variety of dedicated stone cutting and lifting equipment
  • As part of the Stonemason team, acting as an occasional ambassador for Gloucester Cathedral and its heritage to promote the heritage craft of stonemasonry

Please note that successful Level 3 candidates must be able to undertake the Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship Foundation degree starting in September 2021 (  Successful Level 2 candidates will undertake Level 3 studies and associated work from September 2021 before starting the fully funded CWF Foundation degree in September 2023.
