Jazz in the Lady Chapel: Dom Franks and the Strayhorns

Jazz in the Lady Chapel: Dom Franks and the Strayhorns

Friday 18 May 7.30pm - 9.45pm

Gloucester Cathedral Lady Chapel

The StrayHorn quartet was formed in 2010 to showcase the lyrical original compositions of Cheltenham-based saxophonist Dom Franks, a former student of Jazz Messenger Jean

Toussaint, and winner of the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Musician competition. The band’s sound is accessible, lyrical but rooted in creative improvisation and hard-driving grooves. Wide-ranging influences include Robert Glasper, Kenny Garrett, Kneebody and Joe Lovano, as well as Vaughan Williams and Afrobeat.

This concert will focus on material from the band’s newly launched third album Living With Spooks. The lineup will feature guest pianist John Law , as well as regular members Billy Weir (recent winner of the Tony Levin ‘most swinging drummer’ award), bassist James Agg) and Alex Steele on keyboards.

Doors open at 7.00pm for pre-concert drinks. Interval drinks will be served in the garth.
