Informal Lunchtime Concert

Santa Monica High School Choir, USA

Wednesday 5 April 1.00pm

Admission free

The The Madrigal Ensemble and Chamber Singers at Santa Monica High School are a select group of very talented and dedicated singers. Most singers are between the ages of sixteen to eighteen years old, and come from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Each student is required to go through a lengthy audition that tests individual abilities in music literacy, beauty of tone, dedication, and citizenship. This ensures that only the best students are selected. They rehearse five hours per week and also meet in small groups once per week for another rehearsal. Both ensembles perform frequently throughout Southern California and tour every two years. Previous tours have taken the group to Boston, New York, Mexico, and Italy. Both groups specialize in music from the Renaissance to Contemporary compositions with an emphasis on a cappella music.

Jeffe Huls has been Director of Vocal Music at Santa Monica High School for six years. There he conducts seven ensembles and oversees three other student-led ensembles. Mr. Huls received his Bachelor’s of Music Education from the California State University at Long Beach where he graduated with honors. There he studied voice with acclaimed tenor Jonathan Mack and conducting with Dr. Lynn Bielefelt. He spent his free time working with inner-city youth through the Music in the Middle Schools Program as well as conducting numerous church choirs. After graduation, Mr. Huls worked at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, California where he was honored as the Santa Monica Young Educator of the Year in 2001. He left middle school teaching in 2003 and in 2005 Huls received a Masters in Choral Music Conducting from Western Michigan University. There he studied conducting with Dr. Joe Miller, assisted with the choral program, taught class voice, conducting labs, and Concert Choir. Students of Mr. Huls have won vocal competitions, choral competitions, been featured on National television, and have become professional musicians.
