How Like An Angel

A former Three Choirs Festival performer will be returning to Gloucester Cathedral for a unique international production in which contemporary circus skills mingle with a soaring score.
How Like an Angel was conceived and is directed by Circa’s Artistic Director Yaron Lifschitz in collaboration with Music Director Robert Hollingworth and his acclaimed vocal ensemble I Fagiolini

Gloucester Cathedral is one of four cathedrals chosen to host the UK tour of How Like An Angel – commissioned by Norfolk & Norwich Festival for London 2012 Festival.
Members of internationally acclaimed Circa will perform challenging and stunning moves in shadows and spaces around the cathedral interacting with I Fagiolini to create a tapestry of aural and visual delight.

Audience members will walk around the cathedral discovering the performances in this contemplative theatrical experience – an interplay of music and physical movement, which is both intimate and beautiful.

Music Director Robert Hollingworth is looking forward to returning to Gloucester where he developed his passion for music. Robert studied at Hereford Cathedral School from 1975 to 1983 and sang in Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester as a Hereford chorister in 1980. He commented: “Gloucester Cathedral has so many memories but also connections for me. I sang in Three Choirs Festival evensongs and concerts there as a Hereford chorister in 1980. I also connect the building with the instinctively ‘right’ sound for the music of Herbert Howells, which I love. But now we’ll be making its famous acoustic ring with fabulous one-to-a-part vocal music which has a different sort of intensity.”

“I Fagiolini has done some unusual things in its time but I think this one takes the biscuit. Combining circus and vocal music has been an invigorating but intriguing process and what results is more than a sum of its parts.”

The production has been commissioned as part of London 2012 Festival - the spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration running from 21 June until 9 September 2012 bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK.

The How Like an Angel tour will come to Gloucester Cathedral on Monday 16 July at 9.30pm and Tuesday 17 July at 8pm and 10pm.

Tickets for How Like An Angel cost £20 and £5 for under 25s. Tickets are available from www.cheltenhamfestivals.com or phone 0844 880 8094.
